Aqua Products ABT Aquabot Turbo In-Ground Robotic Pool Cleaner Repeat Buyer – KK – Voorhees, NJ
This is my second Aquabot Turbo. First did a great job of cleaning the pool, and lasted about 7-8 years (although during the last 4-5 years we had to replace a few parts such as drive belt, roller pads, and plastic side pieces). Otherwise, this product is relatively low maintenance. This new version seems to work even better.
Overrated – D. Billing –
Before I bought this, I read a lot of reviews and everyone seems to love it. I have a 30 by 15 foot in-ground pool and a 48 square foot DE filter in Tampa. It is open year round.
…I hated the Aquabot Turbo, and here is why:
1. it misses 50% of the pool. It spends most of its time in the deep end because the weight of the bag when 1/2 full prevents it from climbing to the shallow end. It also can only climb up 1/2 the wall even with all the additional flotation blocks with a 1/2 full bag.
2. Cleaning the filter bag is WAY BEYOND disgusting. Here I am with a gigantic filter around the side of the house and I am struggling 3 or 4 times a week to empty a disgusting batch of frog guts and primordial ooze from a little panty-esque filter bag. Can you say “flesh eating bacteria”? Everybody exclaims “not having crud go into your filter is a big advantage”. HUH? That is the sole purpose of a filter.
3. It takes too much time. I went from spending 20 minutes a *month* maintaining my filter to about 1 hour a WEEK maintaining the silly Aquabot. Sure, my filter was spotless, but that is zero advantage. How I longed for the few minutes I spent backwashing it, never handling the biohazards inside the little bag. I can backwash a month’s worth away in 20 minutes, or I can empty the Aquabot colostomy bag 12 to 16 times per month, spending 15 to 20 minutes each time for a total of around 220 minutes per month!
So in keeping with The Greater Fool Theory, I unloaded the Aquabot and bought another new Kreepy Krauly – and I am once again enjoying life.
I only wish I had not given away my box of Kreepy parts when the Aquabot Turbo showed up.
The good:
Every time I drop the Aquabot in, it comes out with stuff in the filter – so it is doing what its suposed to! I missed the start of the season – with some big leaves and lots of smaller stuff, so I do not know how it handles this stuff yet. So for now it is simple upkeep.
The bad:
First time I dropped it in it got stuck on the ladder. I have to admit that I dropped it in the shallow end parallel to the end wall – so it headed straight for the ladder. No big deal for me – I can take the ladder out in less than a minute.
The ugly:
The “random” path is really a way of saying that the Aquabot has no clue what it is up to – or where it is. My guess is that some advertising wonderboy turned “robot has no way of navigating” into “random path covers entire pools”.
Bottom line:
I live in the NE – so I cover the pool at night to keep the heat in. Stuff still gets in – enough that I could spend an hour a day vacuuming. So this little fella saves me time that I do not have. I think that for those who live where they do not need to cover the pool, this is an even better investment. I paid 0 incl delivery, so shop around. I got the Turbo rather than the regular for a couple of reasons, one being the timer.
